Please be patient while we dash around our site packing it with loads of holiday content for you to enjoy!
Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia, the state's largest city and the fifth-most populous city in Australia. Today, Adelaide is known by its many festivals and sporting events, its food and wine & its coastline and hills. I visited Adelaide for the first time mid 2023 and I did notice the atmosphere suited to all Travellers. With lots of options to fill both a short visit or a family holiday. Our short itinerary of 4nights allowed us an overview through the city, into the hills, around the small Suburbs and of cause the beautiful beachside. Here are some of our top picks we find valid for your consideration.
We headed straight to Adelaide Hills........Via Willunga
we suggest you Head to High Street Willunga
Willunga is believed to derive from the Aboriginal word 'willangga,' which means either "the locality of green trees" or "black duck." Anthropologist Norman Tindale, however, recorded 'wilangga' as meaning 'place of dust,' where 'wila' means "dust" and 'ngga' means "a place".

This spot is absolutely charming! It's old-school baking at its finest, offering a variety of cakes and slices perfect for pairing with morning or afternoon tea. The rich history of this quaint cafe piqued our interest, and the menu, featuring delicious favorites and toasted sandwiches, convinced us to add this retro cafe (formerly a petrol station) to our must-visit list!

The Old Police Station and Court House, constructed in 1855 from stone quarried nearby, has been transformed into a National Trust Museum. Initially, it served as a female immigration depot until 1872 and also functioned as a distribution center for food and blankets to the Aboriginal people. Significant expansions were completed in 1864. In 1970, it was restored and inaugurated as a museum, featuring a faithfully reconstructed courtroom and well-preserved cells to provide visitors with an authentic experience.
** The Old Bush Inn **
Location: 51 High St, Willunga SA 5172
Opening Hours: 12 noon - 8pm DAILY
Price: Per menu
The original Old Bush Inn, established in 1839, has undergone two reconstructions. This pub is steeped in significant history, notably its first female publican, Mary Ann Atkinson, who presided over the distinctive two-story Bush Inn constructed in 1870 using locally-produced Atkinson bricks. The inn served as a venue for dinners, public meetings, court hearings, and District Council gatherings. Notably, an inquest took place here in 1853, prior to the construction of the Court House.
The current single-story Bush Inn, which opened in the Federation year of 1901, fronts High Street. Catherine Broderick was its first licensee, and it's reputed to have been a delightful holiday spot for coach travelers, providing quality accommodation at reasonable rates. The Willunga sheep, cattle, and horse markets took place in the inn's spacious yards. Today, you can savor traditional chicken schnitzels, pizzas, mixed grills, gourmet steaks, children's meals, vegan options, and of course, the bar! It's a great spot to soak in some history and grab a bite.
** The Old Post and Telegraph Station **
Location: 30 High St, Willunga SA 5172
Opening Hours: 8am - 3.30pm DAILY

Directly across from the Old Police Station and Court House stands the Old Post and Telegraph Station. The single-story section at the higher end of the building dates back to 1857. Opening in 1858, it housed the Post Office, Telegraph Station, and the Postmaster's Residential Quarters. It's another historical site worth visiting while you're on the street, if only for some enjoyable photo opportunities!

Heading over to Port Willunga, the Star of Greece is a classy restaurant which has become a magnet for people travelling to Port Willunga and boasts unforgettable views across Port Willunga beach.

** South Australian Museum **

Although I didn't have them with me, the kids would have enjoyed this stop. A fun area filled with animals from around the world allows for a glimpse into the wildlife of other countries. I really enjoyed this exhibit.
What took me by surprise was the Aboriginal exhibit, which provided an extensive insight into nearly every aspect of its history. I also appreciated the chance to learn about the diverse First Nations lands and areas of interest through the large maps.
I was truly impressed by how well this section of the museum presented and represented the indigenous community.
Spanning two levels, this museum provides a glimpse into the ocean's mammals, sea life displays, and numerous artifacts that offer an understanding of our world. I must say, this museum ranks among the best I've visited, even without the added cost of the current special exhibit. It's a free, all-weather destination that should be on your itinerary.
** Glenelg Marina Pier **

I strolled along the Marina at dusk, which might have been the windiest day of my visit. The timing could have been better in terms of weather, but the upside was enjoying everything it had to offer with minimal crowding... That's definitely a win!
The dining appeared delectable, with meals glimpsed through windows being served in fair portions and seemingly appreciated by the engaged patrons.
There are numerous dining options available, from seafood delights like $2 oyster Kilpatrick to upscale steaks, Italian, Japanese, and Greek dishes, as well as enjoyable takeaways such as Mr. Potato, which offers hot chips in various styles and flavors.
With nearby parks, viewing platforms, and ocean-view dining, this would be a prime spot during the warmer months! Definitely worth a visit, especially since it's also kid-friendly and accommodating.

Cute and full of character/s..hahaha!
I found a $5.00 Maybelline foundation at a small local chemist, marked down due to packaging changes. It's worthwhile to pop into various stores not just to browse products, but also for days like this when you can enjoy hunting for bargains and discovering hidden treasures!
I also stumbled across the local pub which on Friday nights offers every patron who purchases a drink free entry into the nightly Meat and Slab raffles … this got loud and wild really fast the locals are very passionate about a meat tray! Whilst enjoying the vibe here, I indulged in a bowl of chips accompanied by an aioli and salsa mix, which seemed to have been prepared with considerable care despite being a standard side dish on many menus - quite impressive!
EVERYONE makes a great Lemon Lime and Bitters in Adelaide - my signature drink never failed to satisfy the entire trip!
Jetty Road, the main street, offers a variety of shopping choices ranging from men's clothing and gifts to a post office, as well as dining options including ice cream shops and pubs with street-side domed dining for an enjoyable family meal. Wow this is huge - bigger than I expected for a choc shop - I had a vision of a small retail area inside these factory walls -MIND BLOWN - genius layout allows for workers to engage and chat with customers (like me) asking questions for a full tourist experience! I’m not one for sweets yet I was keen to visit here just the same and I’m so glad I did…. They have some fun supplies like themed bags for the kids, rocky road section, Turkish delights in abundance and lots of fun eats like the cow patch section offering well you guessed it cow poop chocolate! Great marketing!
A sweet area heading into the store offers a cafe serving coffee, tea and fun hot chocolates in many flavours that are hard to resist on what was a cold, wet and windy visit.
